BioBag and Compostable / Biodegradable Standards
BioBag has been at the forefront of development of compostable and biodegradable amterials. BioBag was a pioneer in the production of MaterBi® compostable bags and films produced by Novamont, the pioneer of compostable materials, first producing compostable and biodegradable films and bags in 1993. Since the introduction of The European Standard EN13432 all BioBag products have complied with that standard.
In Australia BioBag Australasia Pty Ltd (then known as Ausasia Link Pty Ltd) was a founder member of the Australasian Bioplastics Association one of whose primary aims was administration of the Australian Standard AS4736-2006.
All BioBag products sold in Australia meet AS4736-2006
To be certified compostable in Australia, 90% biodegradation of material must occur within six months. It is a condition that degradation occurs through biodegradation, that is by genuine microbial action, rather than structural degradation, as with conventional plastics).
MaterBi resins easily achieve biodegradation rates comparable with natural cellulose control material.
BioBag uses Mater-Bi materials that are certified ‘biodegradable and compostable’ under the EN13432 and EN14995 standards for Europe and under the ASTM D-6400 standard for the United States, AS 4736 in Australia, GreenPLA system in Japan.
